🌅 Early light over Estonia

After completing Lithuania’s Aukštojas Hill, I drove north through quiet Baltic countryside, spending the night at a small roadside guesthouse called Villa Roza in Latvia. The air smelled of pine and summer rain; the silence was absolute.

At dawn, I continued toward Suur Munamägi, Estonia’s highest point. I arrived just after sunrise, the place empty, still, and washed in early golden light. The short walk led through dewy grass to the observation tower, where I stood alone at 08:44, watching mist drift across the endless forest canopy.

It was one of the calmest moments of the expedition: no rush, no people, no noise, just wind in the trees and the distant hum of waking countryside.

☁️ Clouds rolling in over Latvia

After a short break, I got back in the car and turned south, crossing into Latvia by late morning. The road curved gently through farmland and forest until I reached Gaiziņkalns, the country’s highest point.

A short forest path led to the summit area, green, soft, and silent. I reached the top at 11:02, under heavy grey clouds. The air was humid, thick with the scent of rain. Just as I took the final photos near the summit monument, the first drops began to fall.

🕰️ Evening in Vilnius

After completing both Baltic summits, I drove back to Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, to catch my evening FlixBus to Kraków. With a few free hours before departure, I wandered the cobbled streets of the Old Town, lively, colourful, full of music and cafés.

I treated myself to a traditional Lithuanian meal: cepelinai (potato dumplings) and cold kvass — enjoying one of the most comforting dinners of the expedition. Sitting there, watching the sunset light spill over Vilnius’s rooftops, I felt a deep sense of peace.

It was the perfect ending to a calm Baltic chapter before heading back south toward the mountains again.

Reflection

That day felt like a breath between storms, two peaceful climbs in one continuous flow, completing the Baltic trilogy (Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia) within 24 hours.

There was something deeply grounding about these small peaks. No altitude challenge, no danger, just simplicity, serenity, and quiet travel through landscapes that felt untouched by time.
