🧭 Overview

Halti, Finland’s highest point, lies deep in the far north, a lonely ridge just across the Norwegian border, surrounded by tundra, fog, and silence. Unlike most European summits, Halti isn’t dramatic or steep. Its power lies in its remoteness and the journey it takes to reach it.

❄️ The Arctic Road

After descending from Galdhøpiggen, I drove south again to Oslo, returned my rental car, and boarded a late flight north to Tromsø: a gateway to the Arctic. The plan was simple: drive to the Norwegian side of the border and climb Halti from there.

But “simple” quickly turned into an off-road adventure through pure fog.
The 191 km drive took me through desolate valleys, gravel tracks, and the worst visibility I’ve ever experienced. For hours, the world was just white mist and the faint outlines of headlights.

I was incredibly lucky to have a new Toyota RAV4, sturdy and reliable. On narrow dirt roads, at times inches from mountain edges, that car probably saved my life.

🥾 The Climb

After a short rest in the car, I started the hike at 17:00, aiming to reach the summit before nightfall. The weather was mild, but visibility was almost nonexistent. I followed faint cairns and relied heavily on GPS to stay on route; without it, I would have been lost within minutes.

The landscape was lunar, endless stones, patches of snow, and soft Arctic moss. It felt more like another planet than mainland Europe.

At 20:00, I reached the top of Halti (1,324 m) — a pile of rocks and a summit cairn barely visible through the fog. The silence was total. I took a few quick photos, breathing in the surreal atmosphere of Finland’s highest point, hidden in mist.

⛅ The Descent

As I descended, the light shifted into that soft Arctic twilight that never fully turns to darkness. Somewhere below, fog thinned enough to reveal a faint glow on the horizon. My ankle began to ache from the uneven stones, but I made it back safely just before midnight, exhausted and strangely peaceful.

💬 Reflection

Halti wasn’t a mountain of adrenaline; it was a mountain of isolation and endurance.
No crowds, no huts, no sounds — only the hum of the wind and the distant echo of gravel beneath my boots.

The off-road drive, the mist, and the endless rock fields made this climb feel like stepping off the edge of the world, arctic ending to the northern chapter of the Crown of Europe.
